New theatre technology
Revolving stages allow for scene changes without having to rebuild the sets. These changes, along with the lighting, constantly shift the audience’s viewpoint. Reinhardt first used a revolving stage in 1905 in the New Theatre on Schiffbauer Damm (now the Berliner Ensemble). This model for the stage of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream gives an idea of how Reinhardt’s theatre enticed audiences into a world of its own. All major theatres today have a revolving stage.
