Draft: Africa and participating countries in the Festival Mondial des Arts Nègres

  • Drawing
  • Janheinz Jahn
  • 1966

The map depicts the countries of Africa as they existed at the time of the Dakar Festival. For example, “S/O africain” (South West Africa) has only been an independent country (as Namibia) since 1990. Janheinz Jahn drew all the countries participating in the Dakar Festival on the map. From the other side of the sheet, a table shines through, listing all of Africa's then already independent countries with their respective populations, the size of their territories and the date of their independence. These documents also reflect the political nature of the Festival. Two further Festivals were held – in 1977 in Lagos, Nigeria (FESTAC´77), and in 2010 in Dakar (FESMAN).
