Der Ventilator war Teil einer Niederdruckdampfheizung, die der technikbegeisterte Kaiser Wilhelm II. 1894 für den berühmten Weißen Saal einbauen ließ. Von Heizern mit Kohle befeuert, sorgte das moderne Heizsystem nicht nur für Wärme, sondern mit Hilfe von Ventilatoren auch für Frischluft. Die alte Heizung hatte mit der Warmluft auch Ruß in den Saal geleitet. Dank der neuen Anlage mussten die Gäste ihn nicht mehr mit schmutzigen Kleidern verlassen. Die Heiztechnik wandelte sich im Laufe der Jahrhunderte immer wieder. Ob Mönche eine mittelalterliche Zentralheizung befeuerten oder Schlossdiener Brennholz für Kachelöfen lagerten – der Keller spielte zu allen Zeiten eine wichtige Rolle für das Beheizen der darüberliegenden Gebäude.
