The six fragments were part of a cornice that crowned the facades of both palace courtyards. This cornice was an element which Andreas Schlüter borrowed from classical architecture. By placing the building in this tradition, he underscored his patron's high status, since the ancient world was the primary frame of reference for royal architecture in the Europe of the time. Eosander von Göthe similarly paid homage to antiquity in his designs for the extensions to the palace.
