In the spring of 1989, hundreds of thousands of young Chinese protested for democracy, political transparency, civil rights and an end to corruption. On 3/4 June, the Chinese army killed thousands of them – the precise figure has never been published. On 5 June, an entire column of tanks stopped on Tiananmen Square in Beijing in front of a young man, who refused to give way. Fernando Sánchez Castillo’s personification of the “Tank Man” is a memorial to him. Several versions of this exist. For example, Castillo had thousands of copies of a small plastic version produced in a Chinese toy factory.
