Loved and shunned, demolished and remembered: where the Humboldt Forum stands today was once the Palace of the Republic, the representative state and cultural center of the GDR.
The exhibition Blown away: The Palace of the Republic will bring the history and present of the palace to life from May 2024. Memories play a central role in this. Excerpts from video interviews with a total of 21 people show how diverse the perspectives on the site are and how controversial the interpretations are. The stories span an arc from construction to demolition; they are surprising, anecdotal, knowledgeable and often emotional.

The Palace of the Republic, 1977
The exhibition and video interviews are dedicated to the various phases of the building: from its planning and construction (1973-1976) to its use as a multi-purpose political and cultural building in the GDR, its significance as the seat of the first freely elected People's Chamber, its interim use and its demolition in the Federal Republic of Germany, which was completed in 2008.
